Description
The US $20 St. Gaudens gold coin was the result of a dinner at the White House between President Theodore Roosevelt and sculptor Augustus St. Gaudens in 1907. Roosevelt was a president who was very attentive to the appearance of national coins. Passionate about ancient art, he challenged the sculptor to make coins as beautiful as the ancient Greek coins.
St. Gaudens accepted the challenge by making this splendid 20 Dollar coin. On the obverse of this gold coin is a figure of Liberty standing against a rising sun behind her and the Capitoline Hill in the background. The word LIBERTY is engraved on the head; he holds a torch in his right hand and an olive branch in his left hand, one foot resting on a rock. Along the edge the coin features a crown of 64 5-pointed stars. On the right the date can be read, in Roman numerals (MCMVII) below which are the engraver's initials, ASG. On the reverse, the eagle flying towards the rays of the sun occupies the lower part of the coin, while the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - TWENTY DOLLARS stands out on the upper part.
